Founders Statement

New Beginnings House of Refuge is more than a community center — it is a living tribute to a man who believed in the power of second chances. My late husband, Leon Haskins, had an unwavering heart for the underdog. He always bet on those who others overlooked, believing that with the right opportunity, anyone could overcome their circumstances. Leon was once that underdog. Through love, support, and spiritual enlightenment, he found the strength to rise — becoming a businessman, a leader, and a man of purpose.

I often say that I was his opportunity, but in many ways, he was mine. I witnessed firsthand the transformation that takes place when someone is spiritually awakened, encouraged, and empowered to believe in themselves. Leon was the first to be given a “New Beginning,” and this center exists to pass that same strength on to others. We strive to offer not just resources, but hope — not just education, but restoration — and not just support, but a path toward inner healing and lasting change.

I do this in remembrance of Leon — and in honor of every soul still waiting to be seen, believed in, and given their chance to begin again.
